Island of Commitment
Plan Through Commitment

Did you know?

  • Flying fish live in warm ocean waters around the world. Their torpedo shaped bodies helps them gain enough speed to breach the surface of the water. Their large pectoral fins make them airborne.
  • Young flying fish have whiskers on their mouths giving them the appearance that they are part of the plants thereby concealing them from predators when they are most vulnerable.
  • The flying fish uses its amazing gliding ability to escape from predators, which include tuna, mackerel, swordfish and other large fish.
  • There are about 40 species of flying fish but all share certain traits. One trait is their forked tails, the lower lobe is longer than the upper lobe. Many also have enlarged pelvic fins as well, which assist them when they glide.
  • In order to fly, the fish has to gain velocity underwater of about 37 miles per hour. It can fly up to four feet above the water and fly for up to 1,300 feet.
