Did you know?

  • Humpback Whales cover the ocean from Antarctica to the Artic, and from the coast to the ocean. They are one of the largest animals on Earth, about 50 feet (16 meters) long, and weigh 40 tons, about the size of a large bus.
  • Despite their large size, humpback whales can propel themselves above the water using their tails and splash back down (breaching). Some scientists think they do this to splash off parasites, but they may do it just to have fun.
  • These large animals migrate farther than any other animal in the world. Some travel 16,000 miles each year.
  • Male Humpback whales are known for their majestic song, which is a sequence of moans, cries, and howls. The low frequency sounds from the whale can travel very far in water without losing energy, more than 10,000 miles. They can sing the same song for hours and even harmonize with other whales.
  • This large sea animal can eat 4,400-5,500 pounds (2000-2500 kg) of fish during the feeding season.
